Newborn Shocks Doctor by Holding IUD in Hand at Birth — Photo Goes Viral

A doctor was stunned when a newborn arrived holding something completely unexpected in his tiny hand—and the photo of the moment quickly took the internet by storm.

The surprising scene unfolded at Hai Phong International Hospital in northern Vietnam, where a woman gave birth to a healthy baby boy—despite having had an intrauterine device (IUD) inserted two years earlier as birth control.

In an unbelievable twist, the baby was delivered clutching the IUD in his hand. The moment was captured in a now-viral photo, shared by the delivering doctor, Dr. Tran Viet Phuong.

“After the delivery, I noticed the baby was holding the IUD,” Dr. Phuong said. “It was such an unusual sight that I decided to snap a picture. I had no idea it would get this much attention.”

The mother, who asked to remain anonymous, and her newborn are reportedly doing well. While rare, instances of pregnancy with an IUD in place can happen, though it’s extremely uncommon for the device to be found in the baby’s hand—making this a once-in-a-lifetime moment for everyone involved.
