Born Joined at the Pelvis, Sharing 3 Legs and Organs—The Unbelievable Journey of Twin Sisters Zita and Gita
Zita and Gita were born conjoined at the pelvis—sharing not only a body but a powerful bond. They had three legs between them and shared a single set of reproductive organs and part of their intestines. Each girl had her own head, heart, and set of arms, but their lives were deeply intertwined—physically and emotionally.
As children, they embraced their differences with innocence and imagination. They would draw pictures of people with three legs and even altered their dolls to look more like themselves—tying two together and removing a leg so the dolls would “match.”
But as they grew older, a deep desire began to form: they wanted to live as individuals. The dream of independence became their shared mission.
At age 11, that dream took a brave and historic turn. A team of surgeons prepared for what would be the most challenging operation of their careers—a complex and risky separation surgery. Globally, similar procedures had rarely ended well; many failed, or only one twin survived.
The surgery took 12 painstaking hours, including the removal of their shared third leg. Against the odds, the procedure was a success.
Following their separation, both girls had to learn how to walk again—this time with the help of prosthetics. They returned to school, pursued new interests like languages, drawing, and crafts, and began carving out their individual identities.
But their health journey wasn’t over. Due to their unique anatomy, they continued to need regular medical care.
Then came a heartbreaking setback. Not long after the surgery, Zita passed away from sepsis—a serious infection that led to fatal complications.
Devastated but determined, Gita carried on. She lived for both of them, holding onto their bond while forging her own path. Years later, she faced yet another battle: a cancer diagnosis. She underwent intestinal surgeries and rounds of treatment.
Today, Gita is 33 years old. After everything she has endured, she continues to fight. She lives with courage, strength, and the memory of the sister who will always be a part of her.
Her story is not just about survival—it’s about the power of love, hope, and never giving up, no matter the odds.
