Officer Didarul Islam, 36, was shot and killed while working off-duty security at a Midtown skyscraper. A devoted husband and father of two—with a third child on the way—Islam ran toward danger to protect others.
An immigrant from Bangladesh and nearly four years with the NYPD, he was known for his faith, courage, and deep love for his family and the city he served.
“He died as he lived—a hero,” said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. Three others were also killed, and the gunman later died by suicide. Islam’s bravery is being honored across the city.
