My mother has been missing for forty-one days.
The police call it a voluntary disappearance. They say she packed a bag, withdrew four hundred dollars from her account, and left.
They say women do this sometimes.
But my mother would never leave me. Not without saying goodbye. Not without a word.
I know her.
At least, I thought I did.
Her name is Patricia Ann Holloway. She is sixty-three years old. She has silver hair she pins up every morning with the same tortoiseshell clip she has used for twenty years. She drinks her tea with exactly one sugar. She calls me every Sunday at ten o’clock without fail.
She missed the first Sunday three days after my wedding.
I told myself she was tired from the journey back to Leeds. It was a long drive from Sheffield, and she had danced more at the reception than I had. I told myself she deserved a quiet morning.
Then she missed the second Sunday.
And the third.
And by then I was already standing in the doorway of her terraced house on Whitmore Road, staring at a kitchen that looked like she had simply stepped out to buy milk and never come back.
Her cup was still on the draining board.
The tortoiseshell clip was on the bathroom shelf.
Only her overnight bag was gone. And her winter coat.
And every photograph of a man I did not recognise had been removed from the shoebox in her wardrobe — I only knew they existed because I found the small square shadows where they had rested in the dust.
I have spent six weeks retracing every conversation we had before she vanished, looking for the thing I missed.
She had seemed nervous at the wedding. I remembered that now. Not the ordinary nervous of a mother watching her daughter marry. Something tighter. Something she kept swallowing down whenever she thought I wasn’t looking.
At the reception she had held my hand too long when she hugged me.
“You know I only ever wanted to protect you,” she had said into my hair.
I had laughed and told her she had done a wonderful job.
I had not asked what she meant.
I will never forgive myself for not asking what she meant.
My husband Daniel thinks I’m obsessing. He says the police are right. He says some people reach a certain age and simply decide to start over. He says it with a gentleness that makes me want to scream.
My mother did not simply decide to start over.
Something drove her out of that house.
I started with her neighbours, then her friends from the church hall, then the women from her Tuesday watercolour class. Everyone said the same thing — she had seemed distracted lately. Quieter than usual. One woman said she had seen Patricia sitting in her car outside the house for nearly an hour one evening, just staring at the steering wheel.
That was two weeks before the wedding.
Then yesterday everything changed.
I was in the car park behind her street, the same place I go when I need to feel close to her without breaking down in her empty kitchen again, when a woman approached me.
She was perhaps seventy. Small, careful in her movements, wearing a pale blue raincoat. She had the look of someone who had been working up the courage to do something difficult.
“Are you Patricia’s daughter?” she asked.
My heart lurched straight into my throat.
“Yes,” I said. “Do you know where she is?”
The woman looked at the ground for a moment. Then she opened the canvas bag she was carrying and lifted out a shoebox — not my mother’s shoebox from the wardrobe, but one tied closed with a piece of kitchen string.
“She left this with me,” the woman said quietly. “About a month before your wedding. She said if anything ever happened to her, I was to give it to you. Only to you.”
My hands were shaking so badly I nearly dropped it.
“She made me wait,” the woman continued. “She said to give you time to settle into your marriage first. She said you deserved a few weeks of not knowing.”
Not knowing what?
I pulled at the string. The box was full of papers, and old letters folded in thirds, and at the very top, a photograph — a man I had never seen, standing beside a much younger version of my mother, both of them squinting into summer sun somewhere with red rock formations rising behind them.
The man had his arm around her shoulders.
The man had my eyes.
I turned the photograph over with fingers that had gone completely numb.
On the back, in my mother’s handwriting: *Before I had to choose.*
I looked up at the woman.
“Who is he?” I whispered.
She pressed her lips together and looked at me with an expression that was equal parts grief and relief — the expression of someone finally setting down a weight they had carried for too long.
“His name is Robert,” she said. “And Patricia didn’t disappear on her own, love.”
She reached back into her canvas bag.
“She left you one more thing. A phone. There’s a voicemail saved on it. She recorded it the night before she left.”
She held it out to me — a small, old-model phone, the kind that does nothing but call and receive.
I took it.
I pressed play.
And the moment I heard my mother’s voice begin — the moment she said *”Sweetheart, by the time you hear this I need you to understand why I could never tell you the truth about the night you were—”*
The audio cut to static.
The battery died in my hand.
And the woman in the blue raincoat had already turned and was walking away.
