Barack Obama Jokes He’s in the Doghouse with Michelle: “Trying to Dig Out of That Hole”

Barack Obama is getting real about married life post-presidency — and he’s not afraid to admit he’s got some work to do with Michelle.

Speaking to students at Hamilton College on Thursday, the former president opened up about how eight years in the White House took a toll on his relationship, joking, “I was in a deep deficit with my wife.” He added, “I’ve been trying to dig myself out of that hole by doing occasionally fun things.”

Obama’s candid comments came during a Q&A with Hamilton College President Steven Tepper, who asked him what he’s been up to these days. Barack shared that most of his time is spent working with the Obama Foundation and wrapping up the second half of his presidential memoirs — which he joked feels like writing “50 term papers.”

The Obamas, who tied the knot in 1992, haven’t been seen out and about together much in 2025 — despite Barack’s efforts to reconnect and have more fun with Michelle.

In March alone, Barack was spotted courtside at a Clippers game and dining out in Los Angeles — both times solo. Michelle was also notably absent at both Jimmy Carter’s funeral and Donald Trump’s 2025 inauguration.

Looks like Barack still has some digging to do to get back in Michelle’s good graces. Good luck, Barry O! 🤷🏽‍♂️
