Oklahoma City Family Mourns Tragic Loss of Toddler Twins in Pool Accident

Editor’s Note: This story was originally reported in March 2023.

An Oklahoma City family is grieving an unimaginable tragedy after 18-month-old twins—a boy and a girl—drowned in the family’s backyard pool. The heartbreaking accident occurred after the children’s great-grandmother, who suffers from Alzheimer’s, accidentally left a back door open.

Jenny Callazzo, a 37-year-old stay-at-home mom and boutique owner, discovered her twins, Locklyn and Loreli, unresponsive in the pool on a Thursday morning. Despite emergency efforts, both children were pronounced dead two hours later, according to the Daily Mail.

Jenny lives in a $565,000 home with her husband Sonny, a 42-year-old marketing executive, their six children, and her grandmother. A family member explained that the great-grandmother’s medical condition likely led to the back door being left open, allowing the toddlers to wander outside undetected.

Aerial images of the home showed a backyard pool with murky, algae-covered water, prompting renewed calls for pool safety awareness. Police are continuing to investigate the accident, though there is no indication of foul play.

Just days before the tragedy, Jenny had posted joyful photos of her twins playing in the yard—images now serving as a painful reminder of the loss.

Neighbors described an emotional scene as the children’s devastated mother climbed into an ambulance while paramedics tried to revive the twins.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help the family cover unexpected expenses and offer support during this incredibly difficult time. The fundraiser has seen strong support from the community, reflecting an outpouring of compassion and solidarity.

Laura Gamino, an injury prevention coordinator at OU Health, emphasized the silent and sudden dangers of drowning—especially for toddlers who lack the ability to escape water on their own. She strongly recommended installing at least 4-foot-high fences with secure, self-latching gates around all pools to prevent similar tragedies.

As the Oklahoma City community mourns Locklyn and Loreli, this devastating incident is a sobering reminder of the importance of water safety. It underscores the need for awareness, proper precautions, and proactive efforts to protect young children.

Let this serve as a call to action—for parents, neighbors, and communities everywhere—to prioritize pool safety and do everything possible to prevent future heartbreaks.
