In 2001, volunteer firefighter Patrick Hardison ran into a burning home to save a woman. The roof collapsed, and he barely escaped alive—suffering third-degree burns across his entire face, scalp, head, and neck. He lost his ears, lips, eyelids, and most of his nose.

For years, Patrick hid behind sunglasses, a hat, and prosthetic ears. Kids were terrified. People stared. He endured 70+ surgeries and constant pain. He couldn’t smile, blink, or even close his eyes properly.

Then, in 2015, everything changed. Doctors at NYU Langone performed the most extensive face transplant in history—an incredibly risky 26-hour surgery involving over 100 medical professionals. His donor was 26-year-old David Rodebaugh, whose mother chose to donate her son’s face after a tragic accident.

The surgery was a success.
