Shelter Dog “Major” Has Been Crying for 260 Days — He Just Wants a Forever Home
Life in a shelter can be tough on dogs, especially when weeks turn into months without a family. For one Indiana pup named Major, that heartbreak has dragged on for over 260 days — and it’s starting to take a toll.
Major is a 4-year-old terrier–pit bull mix who’s been living at the Hamilton County Humane Society in Indiana since his previous owners gave him up. At first, despite the rejection, Major stayed upbeat — a sweet, sensitive guy who adored playing with his beloved Jolly Ball. Staff lovingly described him as a “true companion with a big heart,” and nicknamed him “Major Hunk” and “Major Heartthrob.”
But as time went on and potential adopters continued to pass him by, Major’s spirit began to break.
Heartbreaking Decline
“His spunky personality is dimming,” the shelter shared in a recent Facebook post. “This once-jovial boy who loved his ball now sits in his room and cries nonstop.”
In an effort to ease his stress, Major has been moved out of the main kennels and into a visiting room where it’s quieter. Still, shelter staff know that what he really needs — and deserves — is a loving, permanent home.
What Kind of Home Major Needs
Major would do best in a home without small children or cats, as he can be a little unaware of his own strength. He generally gets along well with other dogs, but a meet-and-greet is encouraged to make sure it’s the right fit.
“Major might not be the perfect match for every home,” shelter staff admit, “but there is someone out there who is perfect for him.”
His adoption profile sums it up beautifully: “If you’re ready to welcome a loving, strong, and playful friend into your life, this is the one for you.”
A Dog Worth Fighting For
It’s heartbreaking to see such a kind and playful dog feeling so down after spending nearly a year in the shelter. But there’s still hope. The shelter team hasn’t given up — and neither should we.
Please help spread the word about Major. Share his story, tell your friends, and maybe — just maybe — help this sweet boy finally find the home he’s been waiting for. ❤️
