Jon Bon Jovi Opens Up About What’s Kept His 36-Year Marriage Strong
Being married to a rock legend like Jon Bon Jovi isn’t exactly the easiest gig. Life in the spotlight comes with plenty of distractions that can challenge even the strongest relationships. But Jon and his wife, Dorothea, are living proof that true love can go the distance—they’ve been married for 36 years and counting.
The two first met as high schoolers in Sayreville, New Jersey. They dated for a few years before Jon’s rising career pulled them in different directions. Eventually, Dorothea got tired of waiting around while Jon toured the world, and they split. During that time, Jon was linked to several famous women, but his heart was still back home in Jersey.
“I basically ran off and joined the circus,” Jon said. “I was out on the road, and she wasn’t thrilled about it. She asked, ‘Why should I wait around?’”
Jon admitted he got caught up in the celebrity lifestyle—dating actresses and living like a rock star. But in the end, he wanted to be with Dorothea.
He showed up at her mom’s house one day and said, “You’ve got to come with me. You’ve got to be with me.” And she did.
In 1989, while touring in Los Angeles, Jon made a secret trip to Las Vegas and married Dorothea at a chapel officiated by an Elvis impersonator. But not everyone was thrilled about it. When Jon returned, his manager was furious, thinking marriage might hurt his image.
“It was like if Harry Styles or Justin Timberlake suddenly got married. I was that guy to young girls at the time,” Jon explained. “My manager told me, ‘America’s boy is married now… that’s not great for your career.’”
His record label wasn’t happy either, and even Jon’s own mom didn’t exactly celebrate the news. “She wasn’t impressed,” he said with a laugh.
Despite the backlash, the couple stayed strong. By 2004, they had four kids and were focused on giving their family a grounded, normal life.
“She’s the glue,” Jon told Today. “I’m the big dreamer with a million ideas, and she’s the one holding everything together—literally stitching the seams.”
Dorothea told People that their kids came first: “We didn’t drag them to events or make a big deal out of the fame. I never pointed to the TV and said, ‘Look, there’s Daddy.’ We just tried to keep things normal.”
And while Dorothea knows fans around the world would line up to trade places with her, she embraces the love Jon gets from fans. “It’s great they love the music and the band,” she said. “They’re so loyal.”
So what’s their secret? When People asked in 2020, Jon summed it up simply: “Mutual respect. Growing up together, and growing together. We actually like each other. We want to hang out.”
Beyond music, the couple runs two Soul Kitchen restaurants, which serve meals to those in need, and they’re behind the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation, which builds affordable housing for underserved communities.
It’s clear that for Jon and Dorothea, love, respect, and a shared mission have helped their bond withstand the test of time.
