Kool & the Gang Member “Chicago Mike” Sumler Killed in Georgia Car Crash
MABLETON, GA — Michael “Chicago Mike” Sumler, a longtime member of the legendary funk group Kool & the Gang, was killed in a car crash late Sunday night in Cobb County. He was 71 years old.
According to Cobb County police, the crash happened around 11:35 p.m. on Veterans Memorial Highway near Buckner Road. Sumler was driving a black 2014 Nissan 370Z when he crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a 2025 Kia Sorento. He died at the scene. The other driver was not injured.
Sumler, known for his high-energy performances as the band’s hype man and background vocalist, played a major role in shaping the sound and stage presence of Kool & the Gang. The iconic group is known for timeless hits like “Celebration,” “Jungle Boogie,” and “Get Down On It”—a mix of funk, jazz, and soul that defined an era.
Mableton Mayor Michael Owens paid tribute to the late musician, saying, “We are saddened by the death of musician Mike Sumler. ‘Chicago Mike’ contributed so much to the music and entertainment communities. His style and energy added flair and excitement to Kool & the Gang for decades.”
