When Dan Tillery adopted a goofy, grinning dog named Diggy from Detroit Dog Rescue, he never imagined a simple photo would go viral—and lead to police at his door.

The photo of Dan and Diggy smiling together spread quickly online, melting hearts. But not everyone shared the joy. A few people reported Diggy as a pit bull, which violated a local ordinance in Waterford, Michigan, even though his adoption papers listed him as an American bulldog.

Soon, officers showed up, and despite Diggy greeting them with friendly licks, Dan was issued a citation. He was told to remove Diggy within three days or face a $500 fine—or worse.

But the community rallied. Over 10,000 people signed a petition to keep Diggy home. Dan gathered vet records and official shelter documents confirming Diggy’s breed. After a legal battle, a judge threw out the case.

Dan shared the victory on Facebook: “We get to keep our boy. He’s a good boy.”
