Texas Mom Prayed for a Baby—Then Got the Surprise of a Lifetime
Laura Perkins had always dreamed of becoming a mom. But after a long and emotionally draining year of trying to conceive, the thought of starting fertility treatments felt overwhelming. Searching for clarity and peace, she and her husband took a mission trip to Nicaragua to figure out their next steps.
While there, Laura opened up to members of her church and her pastor about their fertility struggles. The pastor prayed with her, and before Laura left, she shared a powerful message:
“She told me God had big plans for me,” Laura later wrote on Houston Moms Blog. “She didn’t know what they were—but said it would be big.” At the time, Laura didn’t think much of it.
Back home, they tried just one round of intrauterine insemination (IUI)—and Laura was sure it hadn’t worked. But it had.
At one of her early check-ups, the nurse mentioned her beta levels were unusually high—often a sign of multiples. Laura and her husband braced themselves for the idea of twins or maybe triplets, which already felt like a lot.
Then came the first ultrasound.
After studying the screen for a moment, the doctor said, “I just counted five.” Then paused—and added, “Hold on… I just found a sixth one.”
Laura and her husband were stunned. They had naturally conceived sextuplets, something that happens in less than 1% of fertility cases.
Faced with the overwhelming news, the couple had to make a difficult decision: reduce the number of babies to increase survival chances—or carry them all. Doctors warned the odds of all six surviving were incredibly slim.
But Laura and her husband chose to move forward with all six babies. Their doctor committed to doing everything possible to help Laura reach 28 weeks, giving the babies the best chance at life.
What started as a heartbreaking struggle turned into an extraordinary journey of faith, hope, and love.
