Plus-Size Rapper Sues Lyft After Driver Refuses Ride Over Her Weight
Rapper and influencer Dajua Blanding, known as Dank Demoss, is suing Lyft after a driver allegedly refused to let her into his car because she was “too big to fit.”
On January 18, Blanding says she ordered a Lyft to get to her cousin’s football watch party in the Detroit area. When the driver arrived, she claims he refused to let her in, citing concerns about his car’s tires and lack of space in the backseat.
In a video she posted to TikTok, the driver is heard saying, “I’ve got very tired tires,” and “You have no space… I have no space in the back.” He eventually canceled the ride and drove off, leaving her feeling humiliated.
Nine days later, Blanding filed a lawsuit against both Lyft and the unnamed driver. The suit claims her civil rights were violated and accuses the driver of weight-based discrimination.
“He told her she should’ve ordered a larger vehicle, like a Lyft XL,” said her attorney. “But refusing someone a ride due to weight is no different than denying service based on race or religion.”
Blanding is seeking damages for emotional distress, embarrassment, and mental anguish. Lyft responded with a statement reaffirming its commitment to “a community where everyone is treated with respect.”
Online reaction has been mixed. While some support Blanding’s case, many others sided with the driver, arguing he had the right to decline the ride for safety or vehicle limitations. Even some plus-size commenters noted they typically request larger vehicles for comfort and practicality.
As the lawsuit moves forward, it’s raising questions about discrimination, rider rights, and the responsibilities of gig economy workers.
