A high school in California stirred up controversy after urging students to be mindful about when they chant “USA” at school events. Vista Del Lago High School in Folsom, where the chant had become a common show of school spirit at games and rallies, advised students to use it only at appropriate moments—like after the national anthem or the Pledge of Allegiance.

The guidance came after concerns were raised in a student leadership class, and the principal followed up with a message clarifying that the chant wasn’t banned, but should be used respectfully.

School officials explained that in some cases at other schools, the “USA” chant had been used in a negative or mocking way, which is why they wanted students to consider the context. The school emphasized the importance of showing both patriotism and empathy toward others.
