When staff at Montgomery County Animal Shelter (MCAS) received a call about an elderly black dog found alone in a local park, they thought the rescue would be simple—a lost pup reunited with his family. After all, the dog was wearing a collar with ID tags, which usually signals that someone’s missing their furry friend.
But when rescuers arrived, they were heartbroken to realize this dog wasn’t just familiar—he was family.
The 10-year-old dog, named Rigsby, had been adopted from MCAS six years earlier. Staff remembered him well and were devastated to find him abandoned and neglected—especially after they had once celebrated sending him off to what they believed was his forever home.
“They contacted his owners,” wrote MCAS volunteer Madeline on Instagram, “but they didn’t want him back.”
Despite everything, Rigsby was still the same sweet pup. His tags even read “#SWEETHRT” and “#ICHASECATS,” a hint at both his affectionate personality and playful quirks. True to form, Rigsby quickly warmed up to his rescuers, showing nothing but love and trust.
“He’s such an easygoing guy,” Madeline continued. “I feel so badly for him and just hope he gets a second chance—a real one—this time.”
Back at the shelter, Rigsby showed off his manners and training. He was housebroken, quiet in his kennel, and knew basic commands like “sit” and “shake.” He even made a new friend—another senior dog he now shares a kennel with.
After a vet checkup, MCAS determined that Rigsby would likely need a hospice foster home. Finding placement for a senior black dog is tough enough. Add in hospice needs, and it’s even more challenging. But sometimes, fate steps in.
Shortly after Rigsby’s return, The Forgotten Pet Advocates (FPA) got a call from one of their longtime volunteers, Linda. Just days earlier, she had reached out looking specifically for a senior black Lab in need of a hospice home.
“When I saw Rigsby’s photo, it felt like it was meant to be,” FPA shared on Facebook.
Linda came to meet Rigsby, bringing along her other senior dog, Bentley. The connection was instant. The two dogs became fast friends, and Rigsby clearly felt right at home with Linda.
After signing the paperwork, the new trio—Linda, Bentley, and Rigsby—headed home to start their new chapter together.
“Rigsby settled in right away,” FPA wrote. “He sleeps next to Bentley, follows his mama around, and just wants to be near his family. We couldn’t be happier for him!”
Although Rigsby’s story began with heartbreak, it ends in peace and love. Now, thanks to a second chance, he can live out his golden years surrounded by warmth and care.
“The stars finally aligned for Rigsby,” FPA said. “He will never have to worry again.”
