How Patrick Mahomes Can Come Back Stronger Next Season

The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off a heartbreaking Super Bowl defeat, but if history tells us anything, quarterback Patrick Mahomes will use that setback as fuel for next season.

Mahomes is widely regarded as one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL—if not the best. While some fans may be experiencing a bit of Chiefs and Mahomes fatigue, there’s no denying his greatness. However, Kansas City’s Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles could end up being the catalyst for even greater success in the years ahead.

For that to happen, though, the Chiefs need to give Mahomes more help—both on the offensive line and at the skill positions. His talent has masked some of the team’s weaknesses, but their loss to the Eagles proved that even Mahomes can’t carry the entire team forever, especially against top-tier opponents.

Next season’s roster will likely look different, but as long as Mahomes is under center, the Chiefs will remain a Super Bowl threat. ESPN’s Kalyn Kahler believes that this year’s disappointment will push Mahomes to another level—and could earn him yet another MVP award.

“After losing to the Eagles, Mahomes said his two Super Bowl losses drive him more than anything else,” Kahler noted. “His personal trainer saw how the first loss changed him, and based on that, I expect him to come back even more focused and determined—especially with an improved offensive line.”

ESPN’s Seth Walder also backed the idea that Mahomes is primed for another MVP-caliber season. “When in doubt, go with the best quarterback on the planet,” Walder said. “Even as his stats have dipped in recent years, he’s still elite on third downs. If the Chiefs can improve their early-down efficiency, Mahomes’ numbers should bounce back in a big way.”

The Chiefs have some key roster moves to make this offseason, but if they get it right, Mahomes could be on his way to a third MVP award—further cementing his legacy as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.
